Question: Are T3 capsules available? What is the T3 dose if I was taking Armour or Synthroid?
Answer: The slow release T3 capsules can be compounded into any strength the doctor orders. The most common are 7.5mcg, 15mcg, 22.5mcg, 30mcg, 37.5mcg and 45mcg (these strengths are the components of the kits we prepare for patients who are using the ramping protocol to hopefully reinvigorate their thyroid system). As indicated above, when the doctor determines that the attempt to “kick-start” the thyroid isn’t working, he or she can order the slow release T3, knowing fairly accurately which strength provides the best results for the patient. There is no guessing involved. The patient picks their “best dose” while doing the ramping program.
The ramping protocol doesn’t work often (probably less than 25% of the time). Yet, starting with this protocol offers a side benefit if it doesn’t work at starting the thyroid functions again – the patient and doctor can learn what dose is best for them.
Side effects are possible (thyrotoxicosis is a deadly one), but they are much less frequent when the T3 is offered in a properly compounded slow release capsule.
